CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

“She never showed him attention. She never seemed to want to be close with Tom. She was so busy with her own life,” Wanda Miller reflected. “I don’t blame Sharon for anything; it might not have been her fault. I just think she got so used to not having any kids around her that when she had the chance to be a mother, she didn’t know how.”

For years, Wanda and her husband Randy had tried to become substitute parents to Tom, but it was practically impossible. Yes, they were his aunt and uncle, but they were two young kids themselves, just in their early twenties when Tom first arrived in town. Besides, he was gone so much, always back and forth to Mississippi and so forth, that they really couldn’t keep up with him.

Of course, Wanda made sure that Tom knew he always had someone he could talk to in Falls City. She knew he didn’t like Sharon. Tom often spoke about how evil his mom was. More than once, Ed told him Sharon was into witchcraft, and Tom believed it, even if it wasn’t true.

“When they arrested him for stabbing himself, they took him up to Lincoln for a psychiatric evaluation, and we thought maybe he was receiving the help he needed, but he would never talk about it,” Wanda recalls. “I guess Tom came to me as a mother figure, I don’t know.”

Wanda insisted that Tom be a part of the family, that he come over to the house not just on holidays, but whenever be felt like it. She always had a place for him at her table, even in the rough years when she and Randy were without jobs and living on welfare. Her heart went out to Tom because he always seemed like a confused, vulnerable kid. She and Tom were only about ten years apart in age, so they could drink and let loose together. At times Tom would really open up to her, especially when it came to getting advice on how to handle Kandi Gibson, the girl he eventually wound up marrying.

“When he talked about Kandi, I just sat with my hand in front of my mouth the whole time because I couldn’t believe how stupid she sounded,” Wanda said. “The way he described her, she just hung all over him like a dumb blonde; she just couldn’t let him out of her sight. But I think that’s what he was looking for, that type of attention.”

Tom met Kandi in October 1990. He had just turned eighteen, she was a couple of years younger. When he and Kandi went out on their first date, he considered her a one-night stand, but still, he jokingly asked her if she’d marry him just to see what she’d say. Of course, Kandi said yes. She had a six-month-old girl, Bobbie Faye, who needed a daddy, and Tom seemed a perfect candidate.

Tom fell in love with Bobbie the moment he laid eyes on her cute face and full head of blond hair; he thought she looked like him in a strange way.
